From Brazil to Portugal, interview with Marcelo Rebelo, President of Portugal

In the interview, the journalist commented on the increase and immigration of Brazilians and political leader noted that there has been a reunion between the two countries in the last 3 years. However, what most caught our attention was the fact that the president spoke about Brazilian immigration naturally. As my family and I intend to migrate to this country, knowing that we will be welcome reassures us. However, it is important to emphasise that prejudice exists anywhere in the world, and that although we are welcome it does not mean that we will be welcomed by everyone. After all, we will always be immigrants. It is of immense importance how we will react in these situations, we need to have wisdom and empathy with our neighbour. It's not what we say but how we say it.

An observation that stands out in the interview is the simplicity of the president, how he demonstrates to treat everyone equally, as a popular saying in Brazil says, and how he separates "jewels" from "wheat" when it comes to family. And when it comes to the Portuguese people, he adds: "It's one thing to be close to the people, but to be really - it's not to say that you love the people, it's going to spend the night with homeless people, it's being with the elderly, it's being with the poor, it's not talking about the poor".

Still on immigration, Marcelo Rebelo commented on the mass immigration of Brazilians, saying that Portugal and Brazil have met again intensely in recent years. "The exchange became of all levels," he said, recalling his time as a teacher. "I had hundreds of Brazilian students," he commented, also citing the immigration of Brazilian entrepreneurs, scientists, musicians. And where do we fit into that?! I believe that as students and entrepreneurs, after all, we also want to invest in Portugal. The curiosity of the interview was due to the president's personal issues when he assumes that he is able to write a speech with his right hand, while holding the phone with his left shoulder to receive a phone call from the prime minister and, with his left hand, wrote the instructions he received. And if there are Portuguese who doubt the appearance of Our Lady of Fatima, everyone believes that Rebelo is able to dictate two speeches at the same time to two secretaries, as stated in the newspaper El País. He also claims to be hypochondriac of the one who likes to theorise the disease, know the cause, the root, what the treatment is, all for less. He usually walks with a small box with tablets of various colours for an eventual need, although he does not take any of the medicines he takes with him.

His quotes in the interview that most emphasised us are:

"The president's family is not president!"

"President's advisor is not president."

"Portugal and Brazil have met intensely again in the last 30 years. Why did the Portuguese go to Brazil and the Brazilian came to Portugal."
