Money Museum

How about getting to know the Money Museum in Lisbon?!

Among many stories and memories, there you will find the 10 thousand escudo note, issued in 1996, with the portrait of Infante D. Henrique.

10 thousand escudo note

As the Museum informs you on its Instagram account, on that day, in 1460, Infante D. Henrique (1394-1460), the Navigator, son of D. João I and D. Filipa de Lencastre, passed away. An inescapable figure in the history of Portugal, he was part of the “Inclita Generation” mentioned by Camões in Lusíadas.

The drawings that gave rise to this note are by the artist Luís Filipe de Abreu, and were inspired by the “Painéis de S. Vicente” of the National Museum of Ancient Art.

A curious fact is that the Portuguese Republic was proclaimed in Lisbon on the 5th of October 1910. This date was marked with the first commemorative coin of the escudo issued in 1914, designed by José Simões de Almeida and Francisco dos Santos.

The commemorative coin features the symbolic figure of the Republic on the obverse, wrapped in the national flag, and the coat of arms on the reverse.
