Created in 1901 on the proposal of Dr. Severino Sant’Anna Marques, the Municipal Museum of Portalegre was inaugurated in 1918 on the premises of the City Council, where it occupied a small room.
In 1959, the Museum was transferred from the São Bernardo Monastery – where it had been since 1932 – to its current location, a noble house from the 18th century. XVI located next to the Cathedral of Portalegre, which was formerly Diocesan Seminary, Normal School and Primary School.
In that same year, the building undergoes adaptation work, with the opening of the Museum's new premises on May 28, 1961.
The Municipal Museum of Portalegre has a very rich collection of Sacred Art – coming almost entirely from two former convents in Portalegre, Santa Clara and São Bernardo – Furniture, Portuguese Faience and other Mobile Arts, mostly from private donations.
