PORTUGAL | Population

Hi people!!!

Sharing some data I would say it's interesting and that not everyone is curious to research...

📈Portugal's population growth.📉

Portugal has a population of approximately 10,226,306 inhabitants, which implies a population density of 125 inhab/km2, much higher than the rest of the Iberian peninsula.

The ethnic composition of Portugal is a rich combination of several peoples: Celts, Arabs, Romans, Lusitanians, Visigoths and Celtiberians. Portuguese is the language spoken by the vast majority of the population, but also Mirandês, in addition to being taught in the schools of the council of Miranda do Douro (District of Bragança), is officially recognised. The distribution of the population in Portugal presents important differences between the south and north and between the interior and the coast. The north and coast have notably higher population densities in the rest of the country. Regions such as Lisbon and Porto exceed 600 inhabitants/km2, while in Bragança, Portoalegre, Évora and Beja, they only exceed 3 inhabitants/km2. These differences were accentuated during the 1960s, when a genuine rural exodus reduced populations near the border with Spain. The areas of attraction of the interior are the industrial and tourist centres: Lisbon, Porto, Setúbal, Aveiro, Braga. Faro and Algarve, usually the main tourist destination.

In 2020, for the first time in 10 years, Portugal has an increase in its population thanks to immigration.

As publicised in Público.PT, the increase is due to migration. Balance between births and deaths remains negative for the 11th consecutive year. According to the INE, last year half of the people living in Portugal I was over 45.5 years old. Ageing rate has grown and is 163.2 elderly per 100 young people.

And according to the 2019 Demographic Statistics report, on December 31, 2019, the population living in Portugal was estimated at 10,295,909 people, of which 4,897 men and 5,435,932 women, corresponding to an increase of 19,292 people compared to 2018. The positive value of the migratory balance (44 506) contributed to this population variation, which compensated for the negative value of the natural balance (25 214).

Below is a table that in our view is very curious, divides the resident population by sex (No), Portugal and NUTS II, 2014-2019.
