Let's list some interesting facts here:
In fact, its original name is Santa Maria da Vitória Monastery, but it became known as Batalha Monastery. However, it is also called the "Temple of the Fatherland";
It is a Dominican monastery located in the village of Batalha, in the district of Leiria in the Centro region, province of Beira Litoral, in Portugal;
It was built in 1386 by King João I of Portugal in gratitude to the Virgin Mary for the victory over Castilian rivals in the battle of Aljubarrota;
This monastery of the Order of São Domingos was built over two centuries until around 1563, during the reign of seven kings of Portugal, although since 1388 the first Dominican friars lived there;
An example of late Portuguese Gothic architecture, or Manueline style, it is considered a world heritage site by UNESCO;
On July 7, 2007 he was elected as one of the Seven Wonders of Portugal;
In Portugal, IPPAR still classifies it as a National Monument, since 1910. And since 2016, it has the status of National Pantheon.
His story is amazing, right? Did you know that… at the start of the work on the Monastery of Batalha, a small temple was built, the remains of which were still visible at the beginning of the 19th century?! It was in this building – Santa Maria-a-Velha, also known as Igreja Velha – that Mass was celebrated, giving support to the shipyard workers. It was a poor work, done with few resources.
