Do you know which is the oldest bookstore in the world?
You're right who said the one in the photo. Bertrand is today the name of the oldest and largest bookstore chain in Portugal, with more than 50 bookstores across the country and an online bookstore. You will also find Guinness World Records as the oldest bookstore in the world, as in April 2010 it won the title in the category “oldest booksellers in business”.
Founded in 1732 by Pedro Faure, the first Bertrand opened its doors on Rua Direita do Loreto. In 1755, it was his son-in-law who ran the bookstore and, because of the Great Earthquake, he was forced to settle next to the Chapel of Nossa Senhora das Necessidades, returning eighteen years later, in 1773, to the rebuilt Pombaline downtown.
It is well worth a visit! There are so many books and stories that time will fly by. This wealth of history is in Chiado on the famous Rua Garrett near the Armazém do Chiado.
Ah! And one more curiosity! Around the corner of this prestigious bookstore, in fact, History passed. News arrived at Rua Garrett of D. João VI's flight to Brazil, where liberals and conservatives, later republicans and democrats, crossed paths.
