Chinese New Year in Lisbon

Did you notice anything different in this video?!

Some streets in Lisbon are decorated with a flashlight. These lanterns are in honour of the Chinese New Year 2022 that will begin tomorrow, February 1, 2022. It's time to say goodbye to 2021, Year of the Ox (buffalo), and hello to 2022, under the sign of the Tiger, which corresponds to the year 4720 in the Chinese calendar.

In the Chinese horoscope, each lunar year is governed by an animal and the Tiger, under the influence of the water element, will seize the year 2022, giving it its characteristics. It is the third sign of the zodiac, associated with dynamism and determination.

Celebrations begin on Chinese New Year's Day, the first day of the first month of the Chinese calendar, and extend until Lantern Festival Day, the fifteenth day of the first calendar month. It is tradition for families to gather for dinner for the Chinese New Year, in addition to cleaning the house to ward off any bad luck and make room for good luck. The windows and doors are decorated with red papers, among other traditions recorded on this day.

Thousands of Lisboners - many of whom were of Chinese origin - participated in the celebration of the Chinese New Year 2016, which took place in Martim Moniz Square on January 30.
