HOLIDAY | New Year's Day

New Year's Day is celebrated on January 1, and considered a holiday in Portugal. In fact, it is a festive date worldwide, and it marks the beginning of a new year in the calendar, that is, a date celebrated annually.

Because it is a holiday, it works as a day of rest and rest after the festivities of New Year's Eve, from the night of December 31 to January 1, and which extend at dawn.

January 1 is seen as the beginning of a new stage, as it marks the end of a year and the beginning of a new cycle. This change transmits to us a strong sense of motivation, which is reflected in the will to want to change acts and habits. Which change do you want most? Here we wish we can move to Portugal once and for all. Fortunately or unfortunately we have not yet managed to achieve this goal. We hope that our and your promises of change will be fulfilled throughout this year, resulting in attitudes of renewals and achievements.

Traditions

At 00h on January 1 we celebrate with champagne, wishing for the year beginning: health, prosperity, money, love and happiness, among other wishes. There are also those who eat 12 raisins accompanied by 12 desires during the 12 chimes to fulfil tradition.

For New Year's Eve dinner, traditional dishes are prepared with special recipes for cod, tenderloin and turkey, each tastier than the other. The first day of the year is also marked by lunch that brings families together around traditional dishes of the date, such as stuffed turkey, for example.

In the neighbouring country

In Spain, exactly at midnight, people eat 12 grapes and place an order for every trend of the Porta do Sol clock in Madrid. There is a song by the Spanish group Mecano that talks about this event: it is called Un Año Más.
