It is possible to exchange a foreign driving license (in Brazil, known as CNH – National Driver's License) for a Portuguese one.
Just go to a service desk with the necessary documents. To find the one closest to you, click here. When you submit your order, you will receive a guide that allows you to drive until you receive your Portuguese driving license (you will receive it at the address you indicated on the license itself).
But what would the documents be? How much?
Below we will describe the necessary documents:
Valid and definitive driving license.
A civil identification document (any identification document issued by the Portuguese State, except passport).
A medical certificate. The medical certificate is electronic, issued and sent by the physician to the IMT via the internet. It is required for all letter categories.
Declaration certifying that the letter is authentic and indicating: the date of issue and validity of the letter; the categories of vehicles that the driver can drive, with the authorization dates and restrictions that each category has.
Translation of the driver's license into Portuguese, authenticated by the Portuguese embassy or consulate (or another Member State of the European Union) in the country where the license was issued.
Psychological Aptitude Certificate (CAP)
If your letter includes group 2 categories
You can ask a psychologist for the CAP or ask the IMT for the CAP.
But as for the price for this exchange, how much would it be?! The exchange of a foreign letter for a Portuguese one costs €30. However each case is a case! And by analyzing each case, the IMT (Institute for Mobility and Transport) can come to the conclusion that there will be more costs. For example, if it is necessary to take a theoretical test (which costs €30), such as when the foreign license was issued in a country that has not adhered to the international conventions on road traffic.
Means of payment can be made at a counter using the following options: ATM, or cash and/or check in euros, from an account in Portugal, to the order of IGCP, EPE.
If you want, you can still:
check before, in the IMT simulator, which categories of the Portuguese driving license correspond to the categories of your license;
take the completed letter replacement form with you.

Face-to-face service takes place at IMT's Regional Directorates and District Delegations, with service hours to the public from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm on weekdays.
Download the sigaApp application available for Android and IOS smartphones and obtain, between 10 am and 3 pm, a virtual password via the mobile phone for face-to-face service on the same day at IMT service stations. To be served, simply present the virtual password in turn.
