LISBON | Pantheon Nacional

Pantheon Nacional, a famous tourist spot in Lisbon, located in Campo de Santa Clara, has a beautiful view.

Before being the final abode of illustrious Portuguese, the Pantheon began as the Church of Santa Engrácia, a temple built in 1568 by Infanta D. Maria, daughter of King D. Manuel I.

The works took centuries to be completed, to be more specific, four hundred years of construction were worth the popular adage “Obras de Santa Engrácia” to the monument that is today the National Pantheon.

The Pantheon ended up being inaugurated in August 1966 and today houses the cenotaphs (tombs with an absent body) of personalities linked to the Discoveries, such as Santo Constable Nuno Álvares Pereira, and tombs of writers and presidents of the Republic.

The Pantheon welcomes and pays homage to some of the most important personalities in Portuguese history and culture of all times, the Presidents of the Republic Manuel de Arriaga, Teófilo Braga, Sidónio Pais and Óscar Carmona, the writers Almeida Garrett, Aquilino Ribeiro, Guerra Junqueiro and João de Deus, artist Amália Rodrigues and Marshal Humberto Delgado.

In the National Pantheon, you will find a store, which is only open during its opening hours. The store has monument-themed items. For example: author pieces, reproductions of pieces from the collections of monuments, palaces and museums, postcards, CDs and scientific and educational publications.
