Calçada de Santana

Calçada de Santana

Near the Torel Viewpoint, is the Calçada de Santana, a narrow, steep street, where simple and humble houses stand next to manorial buildings. The Calçada de Santana, in the heart of the Parish of Pena (former parish of Santa Ana, founded in 1564 by Cardinal Dom Henrique, after the dismemberment of the Parish of Santa Justa), owes its name to the Convent of Sant'Ana, erected in 1561 by order of Queen D. Catarina, at the top North of the Calçada, where an old hermitage of the same name already existed.

In the middle of the Calçada, on the corner with the Alley of São Luis da Pena, is a post-earthquake building, whose owner in 1867 placed an identifying tombstone, as being there the site of the death of the poet Luis Vaz de Camões. And not far away was born the fado singer Amália Rodrigues.
