Do you know what PID is?

Hi Tips!!!

Well, for those who don't know, PID, it's the International Driving Permit. Therefore, whoever intends to travel or live abroad, an interesting tip is to have the International Driving Permit (PID) in hand. What I found most interesting is that it comes with information in German, Arabic, Chinese, Spanish, French, English, Portuguese and Russian. This makes it easier for the traffic agent to read the driver's data. Another advantage is when renting a car. With the international portfolio in hand, we will have facilities in checking personal information and car rental. Other positive points that we identified are the agility in the assistance in case of accidents and the speed to receive the insurance.

Be aware that the best way to avoid problems during your trip is to request your international license and carry it with your valid Brazilian driver's license. Even the National Traffic Department (Denatran) recommends that Brazilian tourists have their international permit, even if the document is not mandatory.

With so many positive points like that, I decided to take my PID. Since we intend to live in Portugal, and from time to time travel around Europe, I believe that this document will be necessary from the beginning until the moment of exchange. And the doubt, what is necessary for us to get this document?! It was simple, expensive and fast! That's right!! Expensive!!! I found this document absurdly expensive.

Process for requesting the PID (where to issue and what documents are required)

The procedure is simple, the entire process can be done online. The applicant must access the DETRAN website in their state, access the license area (in Portugal it is called a Driving License). Thus, he will have access to some options regarding the license, among them will appear International Driving Permit. Inform your CPF (Proof of Registration Status) and CNH number (National Driver's License). After that, just issue the payment slip and wait for receipt at home. You will also have the option to pick up at the DETRAN closest to your residence, without having to pay the postage fee.

The need to take the PID is very questionable. It is important to weigh in the balance how many times a year you travel internationally, whether you are going to change country… how long it will take to issue a new license and/or driving license. Most of the time, needing doesn't need to, as many countries accept qualified tourists to drive with their respective national driver's licenses. But it's useful. Will the car rental company get in trouble and ask for the international document? Or imagine if a traffic cop stops you in the middle of a road in France, asks for your license, but doesn't understand anything that is written in the Portuguese version? Or if you are going to reside and take a long time to get a new license!

But beware!!! The PID does not replace the definitive driving license of those who wish to change country, it will expire as soon as you establish normal residence in your country of destination. So be aware of the laws of the new country of residence.

How much does it cost

Speaking of costs, in total I spent R$ 204.50 (two hundred and four reais and fifty cents). I paid BRL 12.78 (twelve reais and seventy-eight cents) to receive the document at my residence. I paid the fee on September 13th, 2019, and received the document in less than a week, on September 19th. I was impressed with such agility.

PID validity

The PID issued in Brazil is not valid in the territory of the Federative Republic of Brazil. But it is considered valid in the territories of all Contracting Parties provided it is presented with a valid National Driver's License.

Be aware that the PID validity will be equal to your National Driver's License.
