ETIAS | Visa to Europe, including Portugal from 2021

Attention travelers, from 2021 onwards, it is mandatory to have a travel permit to enter Portugal or other countries in Europe. We must apply for this authorization through the system known as the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS).

The countries that will apply the ETIAS are those of the Schengen Treaty, which includes 22 nations from the European bloc, plus four EU countries: Romania, Bulgaria, Croatia and Cyprus. The UK will not require authorization as it is among those not party to the Schengen Treaty.

Before traveling to Europe, we must complete an electronic form with personal data, travel document information and the country they will enter, and if released, they can stay up to 90 days in Europe. The authorization will cost 7 (seven) euros and will be valid for three years, being free for those under 18 and for those over 70 years of age. To pay the fee you will need a valid debit or credit card.

ETIAS is an automated process for verifying an individual's identity against existing national security alerts, illegal immigration and epidemics.

ETIAS requirements for Brazilians

All Brazilians will have to fill in the online form to apply for the ETIAS travel visa to enter any of the Schengen member countries.

Brazilian travelers will have to provide personal information on the ETIAS form, such as:

  • Full name.

  • Place and date of birth.

  • Sex.

  • Direction.

  • Phone number and email.

  • Academic level or current job information.

  • Information from passport or other valid travel document.

  • Member country of arrival.

  • Respond to the ETIAS eligibility questionnaire.

It is expected that the vast majority of applicants will receive authorization almost immediately, with the final decision on their entry to the EU depending on the respective Member State's border guard.

Many questions will arise, for example, in cases of those who have a residence or long-term visa. You are not required to apply for an ETIAS visa, just present your residence visa at the border, and you will be able to enter the Schengen area.

However, if your visa has expired, you will need to apply for an ETIAS visa to enter the Schengen area.

In order to help applicants not to make mistakes that could negatively affect the result of their application when filling out the online application, we have some tips that we found on the “etiaseuropa.com” website:

  • Carefully read each question or statement on the ETIAS form so that you fully understand the question before providing an answer.

  • Answer each question as honestly as possible.

  • Don't try to change your answers based on what you think will likely lead to the app's approval.

  • The automated systems used to process e-visa and visa waiver applications check applicant data against several different databases to ensure that the information provided by applicants matches information they can retrieve from other sources.

  • Providing false information in an application can lead to a refusal to enter the European Union border.

You will be required to show your ETIAS travel authorization prior to boarding (if traveling by plane, boat, etc). When disembarking in Europe, present the ETIAS to a Schengen Area border control official to receive final entry approval.

The system is not yet available. Once operational, applying for an ETIAS will be simple and straightforward.

They can be submitted online and in advance through the official website of the European Union or through the websites of private companies.
