Feira da Ladra, have you been?

Feira da Ladra is the most popular street market in Lisbon. With roots dating back to the 13th century, the fair moved from place to place, until settling in Campo de Santa Clara, parish of São Vicente.

As we can see in the video above, we can find everything, from the trade of junk, books, furniture, from second-hand objects to handicrafts, and much more. You will find pieces of all values, and if you find it necessary, don't be too excited to negotiate the value. However, pay attention to the electronics, make absolutely sure that they are working perfectly.

The fair takes place weekly on Tuesdays and Saturdays, from 8 am to 4 pm.

And when did the fair start?

Feira da Ladra began in Chão da Feira, in Castelo, probably in 1272, and later moved to Rossio.

It is in the year 1552 that the first news of the holding of the Fair in Rossio appears in the Manuscript Statistics of Lisbon. In 1610 the name Feira da Ladra appears in an official position.

The origin of the name is controversial. But the most accepted theory is the one you are thinking. It is suspected that at that time many of these used products were derived from theft. Hence the nickname “thief”.

After the earthquake of 1755, it settled in Cotovia de Baixo (now Praça da Alegria), extending along Rua Ocidental in Passeio Público. In 1823, she was transferred to Campo de Santana, where she spent only five months, returning to Praça da Alegria.

In 1835, it returned to Campo de Santana, where it remained until 1882, before moving to Campo de Santa Clara, on Tuesdays, and, since 1903, also on Saturdays.

And one more tip..

Take the opportunity to visit the São Vicente de Fora Church and the National Pantheon, two historic attractions next to the fair.

How to get

Take Tram 28 (tram) towards Graça. Get off at Largo de São Vicente, in front of São Vicente de Fora Church.

Post quarantine operation

And attention!!! For the reopening of the city's three weekly fairs (Ladra, Relógio and Galinheiras), the City Council of Lisbon decreed the mandatory use of masks, the availability of alcohol at each stall, the distance between people and the prohibition of customers handling items. The rules are posted in several places in Campo de Santa Clara, but asking visitors not to touch things is nearly impossible. ⠀⠀⠀
