Know where smoking is prohibited in Portugal

Did you know that since January 1, 2008 smoking is prohibited in closed public places in Portugal?!

Lisbon, Portugal

That's right, this prohibition covers all public administration buildings, workplaces, public transport, establishments where health care is provided, laboratories and pharmacies, educational establishments, closed areas of sports facilities, museums, establishments selling food and drinks, covered car parks, concert halls, libraries, hotels, service areas and fuel stations.

Torre de Belém

Restaurants, bars and clubs with an area greater than 100 m² must identify areas reserved for smokers, with adequate ventilation and whose size should not exceed 30% of the total area.

Owners of restaurants, bars and clubs with an area of less than 100 m2 can choose to be a smoking or non-smoking space, and must clearly display this information so that it can be seen from outside the building. These spaces must be well ventilated.

⚠️PAY ATTENTION!!!⚠️

There are sanctions for infringement:

  • From €50 to €750 euros for smokers who do not respect the bans.

  • From €50 to €1,000 for owners of private establishments;

  • From €2,500 to €10,000, from €10,000 to €30,000 or from €30,000 to €250,000 depending on the infraction for legal persons, companies or associations, governing bodies or top managers of public administration bodies, establishments or services that violate the provisions.
