The Castle


The Castle has preserved 11 towers, including the Keep, the Tower of Haver or Tombo, the Torre do Paço, the Torre da Cisterna and the Torre de São Lourenço, located halfway down the slope.


The fortification, built by the Muslims in the mid-eleventh century, was the last stronghold of defense for the elites who lived in the citadel: the Moor mayor, whose palace was nearby, and the elites of the city's administration, whose houses are still visible today. at the Archaeological Site.



At the end of the 20th century, archaeological investigations carried out in various areas contributed, in a unique way, to verifying the antiquity of the occupation on the top of the hill and confirming the inestimable historical value that founded the classification of the Castle of S. Jorge as a National Monument. by Royal Decree of 1910.

  • Pets are not allowed to enter the Castle of São Jorge. An exception was made for “guide dogs” duly framed by Decree-Law no. 118/99 published in the Diário da República no. 87/1999, Series I-A of 1999-04-14.
