Some types of visa

All non-Portuguese citizens who wish to reside there need a visa to enter Portugal. Below are some types of visas. See which one you fit in, remembering that within each type there may be additional variations.

We can divide the main visas into Schengen, short term and tourism, Transit, Study, Work and Residence Visa.

Below we quote the most popular visas:

  • D1 – Visa to exercise a subordinate professional activity (for periods of stay longer than one year);

  • D2 – Visa for enterprising emigrants and/or enterprising emigrants;

  • D3 – Visa for the exercise of a highly qualified professional activity;

  • D4 – Study visa for scholarship holders (scholarship holders), researchers, higher education students (undergraduate, masters), internships or volunteers lasting longer than one year;

  • D5 – Residence Visa for the Mobility of Higher Education Students. Aimed at people who want to complement a study program that has already started. That is, in cases of exchange, double degree, sandwich, among other modalities;

  • D6 – Family Reunification, for family members of a residence visa holder;

  • D7 – Residence Visa for retirees or income holders;

  • Schengen Visa – Better known as Tourist Visa. This is of short duration, which allows the entry of foreigners for short periods, or an airport stopover for passage through international zones of airports in Member States;

  • Residence Permit (ARI) – Also known as Golden Visa, it allows third country nationals to obtain a temporary residence permit for investment activities, with the waiver of a residence visa to enter the national territory. Another advantage is that after 5 years in this program, you can apply for Portuguese nationality and have a European passport.

In our case, we are evaluating 3 options: D2, D4 or D7 (this would be entered only in my husband's name, after approval of the visa, we would use D6 for the rest of the family).

We suggest that you read on the Consulate of Portugal website all types of visas and documents required for each visa. If you still feel unsure, seek help from companies that provide this type of support. And before hiring this service, also research the company's reliability. Thus avoiding waste of time, money and unnecessary wear and tear.
